The South Downs Way links Winchester and Eastbourne across southern England’s chalk hills. This guide uses the mountain-bike source route, which must not be confused with the coastal walking variant.
The official government guide describes a route of about 160 km between Winchester and Eastbourne. The mapped mountain-bike relation is approximately 161 km and has one connected component between those towns. Cyclists use the Jevington approach to Eastbourne, not the Seven Sisters walking route. Walking and riding alignments also diverge near Beacon Hill. Plan with an activity-appropriate itinerary, and allow for journeys between the ridge and overnight stops in nearby villages. The source records rough sections and lacks surface tags for roughly 53 km. These gaps prevent a reliable all-route surface promise; this guide does not label the route gravel-bike suitable.
Follow current diversion signs and the cycling alignment. The official guide specifically directs cyclists through Jevington. Mapped source tags are not a live access notice: roughly 14 km lack explicit or straightforward cycling-access tags. Check operator notices and local signs before setting out.
