How Loamcast Estimates Mud and Wet Trail Conditions

Loamcast estimates likely outdoor route conditions from route geometry, terrain, surface, environmental, and weather signals. This page explains the model at a high level.

What Loamcast Estimates

Loamcast estimates whether sections of a route are likely to be dry, wet, muddy, or higher-risk. The result is a model-based planning signal. It is not an official route status, live inspection, or safety guarantee.

Signals We Use

Loamcast may use several types of signals, depending on regional data availability. If some signals are missing, stale, or ambiguous, confidence is reduced:
  • road and path metadata
  • surface and track information
  • terrain and slope
  • low-drainage terrain indicators
  • soil and land-cover context
  • recent weather
  • forecast weather
  • local weather grid data

How Route Analysis Works

A GPX route is split into smaller sections. Each section is matched with available road, path, terrain, and environmental data. Weather signals are then connected to the route area, and Loamcast summarizes the route into estimated dry, wet, muddy, and higher-risk distances. The output may include a route-level summary, section-level classes, confidence, and reasons such as recent rain, poor drainage, unknown surface, forest cover, or steep terrain.

Confidence

Confidence reflects how complete, fresh, and consistent the available data is. Missing surface data, weak terrain coverage, stale weather data, sparse metadata, or ambiguous route matching can reduce confidence even when Loamcast still shows a condition class.

Internal Model Boundary

The exact scoring model is internal and may change as Loamcast improves. Loamcast does not publish scoring coefficients, thresholds, provider-specific weighting, or full decision logic.

What We Do Not Use

Loamcast does not currently analyze live satellite imagery. It does not use human trail reports, official closures, construction notices, or access restrictions unless a specific source is explicitly shown.

How To Interpret Results

Use Loamcast as an additional planning signal. It can help identify sections worth checking, comparing, or avoiding, but it should not replace local knowledge, official information, event organizer instructions, weather forecasts, or your own judgement.
